A new student

The boy Hayley was waiting for hadn't arrived yet. She sat down and kicked off her shoes, turning the page in her records to mark some information in. She paused at Thomas Conrad as there was a knock at the door.

Ian knocked a second time, one hand poised on the handle of the door for a second before opening. Keeping his gaze downward instead of towards the woman at the desk he shut the door behind him and stood hesitantly, waiting.

Hayley checked the medical records before looking up. "Ian Watkins, I presume?" She asked. "You can sit down."

Nodding slightly, Ian pulled out the chair in front of the desk and took a seat quietly, shifting uncomfortably for a moment.

"I had an interesting email from your previous school in... was it America? the other day." Hayley told him, brushing her hair out her eyes.

"Oh?" Ian looked up curiously, wondering where this was going. Why would.. ah. He tilted his head and waited for her to continue.

"Your track record is... impressive." Hayley crossed her legs. "But we don't bother with things like that here." She picked up Ian's report sheet and nonchalently ripped it in two.

Ian watched silently, the corner of his mouth quirking upwards. "So you have so kindly demonstrated." he said, faintly amused.

Hayley quirked her eyebrow. "This is not your ordinary school, nor are we ordinary teachers." She frowned slightly. "Some of us don't seem to have ever grown up..."

"Well, it sounds fun, not growing up." Ian smiled, politely. Of course, when he said something like that, it always reminded him of.. he snapped himself back to attention. "I'm sure I'll enjoy it here," he continued, adding quickly, "And work hard.."

Hayley raised an eyebrow. "You don't need to bullshit me." She chided him gently. "I have a teenaged son around your age, I know what boys are like." She rubbed her forehead. "I need your help to fill out the medical form."

Ian shrugged in compliance, "Sure." He shifted again in his chair and leaned forward a little.

"Right." Hayley pulled the forms out of their folder. She pushed the others to one side. "Any dietary needs?"

Ian tugged slightly on his hair as he answered, "Nope."

Hayley marked it down on the sheet. "Medication? As in, do you take it?" She narrowed her eyes slightly.

Ian wrinkled his nose and felt queasy at the thought of the last kind of medication he'd been put on. Lucky he was off it now. "No."

"Alright." Hayley marked that down on the sheet as well. "Any acknowledged medical conditions? Please don't say you're photophobic too, you'll give Mike a heart attack."

"Uh, nope.. not right now anyway.." Ian blinked and processed the statement for a second. "Wait. Photophobic?" he said, with renewed interest in what was being said.

"Adverse reaction to light; retinas damaged, something like that." Hayley raised an eyebrow. "Trust me, you'd know if you had it."

"Oh, so there's.. there's a kid here who has it?" Ian questioned, trying to seem as casual as possible.

"Yes." Hayley's brow furrowed. "So, do you have any medical needs, etc? Any allergies?"

"No, none." Ian said hurriedly, and pushed further, "So who is this kid? Are-" he stopped himself and tried to come up with a reasonable explanation for this curiosity, "Uh, I just used to know someone who was, um, photophobic, and.. uh, I'm.. interested?" He cracked a weak smile.

"Ian, photophobia is... well, not exactly wellknown, but reasonably common." Hayley raised an eyebrow. "I have to respect the privacy of other students, I hope you realise that."

Ian coughed slightly; of course, he was overreacting as usual. "Yep. Sorry. So is there anything else you wanna know? Cause otherwise I'll go get lost.. literally."
