Brian poked the tip of Tom's nose, making it wrinkle. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing." Tom turned away, his hands in his pockets. "Just homesick."

"Oh." Brian bit his lip. "I've never stayed anywhere for too long, so I'm not sure I know that feeling." He remembered Tom's description of his family, and wondered how he could possibly want to go back.

Tom shrugged and sat down on his bed. His eyes strayed to the picture on his dresser and he smiled slightly.

"I'm sure your little sister misses you too," Brian tried, speaking very quietly.

"I hope so." Tom scratched his neck. "I hope Dad's taking good care of her."

"He must," Brian said athough he didn't know much. He sat on Tom's bed.

Tom pulled a face and held up his crossed fingers. "I wish she could have come here."

"You can see her during the holidays," Brian suggested weakly. He didn't have strong family values, but he wanted to help.

Tom shrugged. "Yeah. Course I will." He smiled at Brian, scooting further up his bed.

Brian smiled as well, and laid down on his back next to Tom. He folded his arms under his head and stared at the ceiling.

"I told a friend once people should put pictures on the ceiling. I stand by my thought." Tom mused out loud.

"Agreed," Brian replied, blinking. The ceiling was a dull shade of beige. "If I were taller I'd try to draw on it."

"We should get dancey-on-tables-dude to do it." Tom grinned, lying down beside Brian.

"Gabe," Brian corrected with an almost identical grin. "And this ceiling also needs glitter. Sparkles. Something shiny that isn't a disco ball." He chuckled. "Glam rock forever."

Tom chuckled. "I think if any of my friend's back home saw it they'd go mad." We'd have to put a little scrawny cat on. Just for him.

Brian had momentarily forgotten there was such a thing as friends back home. "They don't like shiny things? I like shiny things. I like feathers, too." He giggled.

"...I just have weird friends." Tom twisted his mouth as he thought. "Alex would love it, same probably with Max. Derek's daughter would adore it. And... Ian..." He sighed.

Tom had picked Brian's curiosity. "What about him?"

"Nothing." Tom's face set. "I reckon Tammie would love it."

"Tammie and I have the same tastes," he commented with a small smile. He was still intrigued by his unfinished sentence and it was obvious.

"You must come back with me during one of our holidays then." Tom gave him a smile.

Brian grinned, his chest swelling with pride. He had managed to socialize, and had been good enough at it to score an invitation. "Of course I will."

Tom's smile broadened when he saw the look on Brian's face. He returned to staring at the ceiling.

"I'd offer you the same but if I were you I'd decline. My parents wouldn't make you feel welcome. At all." He shrugged. I'll probably have to lie about visiting Tom anyway.
