"I, uh...I'm not allowed to bring people home, usually. No friends, unless they fit their standards." He chewed on his lip. They need to be female, that's the thing.

"Standards?" Tom raised an eyebrow. "I doubt I'd fit them, somehow."

Brian extended his arm in direction of the top drawer of Tom's bedside table with a playful smirk.

Tom raised an eyebrow. "Why do you want to see it so much?" He asked, catching his wrist.

Brian didn't dare to move. He mimicked Tom's expression. "Why do you want to hide it so much?"

"Because..." Tom sighed. "It's a personal picture. And... it reminds me of things. That... that I'm not exactly trying to forget, but..." He shrugged. "Bittersweet." He let go of Brian's hand.

"A girl?" Brian suggested, his tone implying it might have been a former girlfriend.

Tom chewed on his finger. "...You could say that." He mumbled. "They left in a hurry. I didn't get to say goodbye. I don't know where they are now."

Brian corrected himself, not failing to notice the ambiguous pronoun Tom had used. "A boy?"

Brian made a sweet smile, sitting up straight with his hands on his thighs. "It's okay, you'll probably see him again. It wasn't really a breakup, right?"

"I don't know." Tom whispered, his hands twisting in his lap. "He didn't even tell me where he was going. He didn't tell me he was going anywhere. I... I'm a difficult person to be around."

Brian took one of Tom's hand and held it firmly. He frowned. "Don't say things like that. Maybe he had a good reason beyond his control."

"I miss him, y'know?" Tom ran a hand through his hair. "He was really important to me."

Brian let go of Tom's hand and patted it gently. "Don't be sad because it's over. Be glad because it happened." He crossed his arms. "I wouldn't know what it's like."

"I mean, I've never...been with anyone." He blinked. "I've had a girlfriend ages ago but we barely held hands. My dad was so proud." He snickered.

"You seem to have an interesting family, just like me." Tom gave the boy a rueful smile. "Care to spill?"

"My dad works in finances. Banks, actually. Real tough bloke. And my mom's having an affair with God." He threw his hands in the air. "Total Christian extremist, if you ask me. And I don't just say that because she's homophobic." He pouted and looked into Tom's eyes. "Do I look gay? Jesus, I was sent here for being too effeminated. And for crushing on the basketball team captain, but that's another story."
