Lonely heart

Ivan slumped on his bed, wondering what to do now. Brian was probably with Tom and that boy he said he fancied, and drac was...who kenw where drac was? Sighing in defeat, he got off his bed to unpack, singing under his breath.

Ivan smiled as he sang, remembering why he'd chosen music. He soon found he'd unpacked everything, and he sat on his bed again, now at a loss of what to do.

Reaching into one of the drawers beside his bed, Ivan pulled out a notebook and began writing in Russian. He paused before attempting an English translation underneath.

Giving up the on the translation, Ivan put the notebook away and set out of the dorm, with the intent to try and figure out his way around. A wry smile cross his lips as he closed the door behind him.
"...I need find better English teacher."

Ivan stormed back into the room, glad to find it empty. The day had begun so well, but Ivan was beginning to think he'd had his hopes put up for nothing. Glaring at the picture by his bed, he swept it off in anger, letting it fall to the floor.
"It hate you!" he yelled, glaring at his father's figure and biting back tears.

drac walked in at just that moment. "Hey, you all right?" he asked worried about the other boy.

Ivan glanced up sharply, sinking onto the bed again. "Ya...bad memories."

drac dumped his stuff by the door and went to sit next to Ivan on the bed. "It's okay, we all get them." He looked at the photo Ivan had been shouting at, "Your da? I always hated mine too."

Ivan nodded. "Ya. Mine Pa und I no get on."

"Well he's not here now is he. You get a chance to do what you want. A fresh start." drac put his arm across and squeezed Ivan shoulders in an atempt to comfort the boy.

Ivan smiled a little. "I no think of that way. Thank."

"What are else are we all stuck in one room for other then to stop each other going crazy?" He noticed the russians smile and smiled back more.

Ivan smiled wider and laughed a little. "True! But look like Brian halv way there, ya?"

drac laughed too. "Yeah, well you do have to take in to account that some people were crazy when they arrived."

Ivan nodded. "Ya is very true."

"Your english is really good you know. I'm hopeless at modern languages." He was really amzed at the older boy coming here from russia. He wasn't sure if he would ever be able to do quiet that much to get away from his parents.

Ivan blinked in surprise. "Niet! I is no good!" he protested, laughing nervously. "We having class at school, so I try at that." he shrugged. "I no speak anyone else."

"Your better than you think, i know people who have lived here their whole lives and whose english isn't as good as yours." He was fed up, "You need to stop putting yourself down, forget what your father or who ever said.

Ivan's slight grin faded. "M-Mine Pa? Niet, I no listen to him. Und mine English not good, I know - but is better, I think." he shrugged. "I read English music good!"

"Yeah, i guess music and science are the same any where. It's not like gravity doesn't applie because you cross a border." drac laughed at the idea.

Ivan grinned. "Ya! Is why able to take music here, even though mine English not best."

"Your lucky your here to do something you love. Science is okay, but I'm just good at it is all." He envied the other boy.

Ivan frowned. "What you love?" he asked curiously.

"Science-fiction." said drac whistfully, "Books about far off worlds and inter galactic warfare. I want to write them."

Ivan frowned deeper. "Space-age world books?" he asked. "Sorry, I no sure."
